A few miles from the Belgian border, Lille displays Flemish influence in both architecture and cuisine. Its most famous square - Grand Place - is home to the beautiful Vielle Borse building, the Lille Christmas markets and several restaurants serving moules-frites and local beer.
Behind that is the Palais Rihour, a rather odd-looking building surrounded by cafes. In the opposite direction is another square with the opera house at the centre and triangular-shaped buildings fanning off in 3 directions. One of these cobbled streets leads to the Old Town, where boutiques and international brands are in beautifully crafted shops.
Shopping in Lille is actually epic. It has Europe’s largest bookstore (the 8-floor Furet du Nord) and largest flea market - the Braderie de Lille. Then there is the bustling Wazemmes market and the huge Euralille shopping centre. The town also has some fantastic chocolate shops.
Other attractions include the Musée des Beaux-Arts and the Citadelle – a 17th-century fortress surrounded by a free zoo and gardens.
Lesquin Airport is on the city’s outskirts, but most visitors arrive at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, named after Lille’s most famous son. If travelling to Lille by Eurostar, check out the mural of famous European landmarks before heading to your Booking.com hotel, B&B or apartment.
We got the Eurostar from London in standard premiere.
We got the Eurostar from London in standard premiere. Very nice trip and friendly staff.
Lille is easy to get around. We got a 48 hour pass, for bus, train and tram. Cheaper than in London
You must try HEIN Brique House restaurant. The food is delicious (chicken with Maroilles sauce, bavette, carbonade, and much more).
Many restaurants on Grand Place.
Pity the fountain was not working and there was no water in it.
We ate moules/frites on the first day with lovely desserts.
People are very friendly, bus drivers, staff in restaurants and shops...
We really enjoyed our trip to Lille.

Our trip started on a bad foot as most of the city was closed for the celebration of the 8th May but then, it started to blossom in the afternoon and streets started to become crowded with people.
I recommend to spend most of the time in the old town where most shops are located and where many small cafes are located. You can find many award-winning restaurant in that part and they are very close one another. I recommend tasting the pastries of Dona Bica and Les Merveilleux de Fred. I would recommend to skip the breakfast at whatever hotel and going to a local bakery for some fresh bread. Beware the coffee, I had a hard time finding a decent one, they all tasted much bitter than what I'm used to.
The Citadel is a nice place for a stroll and some quietness. We didn't have the time to visit the Museum of Fine Arts.
Pack a good pair of walking shoes because you will be walking a lot in the city center. You can buy a day pass to use every transportation system for 5.5€. There are bicycles available but there was a deposit system that I wasn't very fond of so I skipped that part, otherwise it is 1.8€ for 24h (but 200€ security deposit).

What is good is the fact that the two mainline stations are so close, very easy walking distance apart, approx 15 mins. I really enjoyed walking around, I must of walked 4 - 5 hrs on the day I arrived, after of course having had a shower and few moments rest on my bed. I'd encourage any first timer to France to go, my French is almost none existent, I learnt it, or didn't learn it at a very poor school many years ago, when we had to translate straight from French to Welsh, and my Welsh was not brilliant, we also had a teacher like a bear with a sore head, so I only did one year; still I got by and was understood on a good number of occasions.

Beautiful architecture, compact and easily explored by foot, very flat too. Fantastic food options. I was surprised to find shops closed on Sunday though, fortunately the Palais des Beaux Arts was open and free to enter.
everything! We have travelled over 39 years for over 50 countries and have stayed different places all over. This is one of the best in terms of location, facilities and value for the money. Metro is 5 mins walk to get to Lille old town. The room is clean and shower is powerful. Wifi signal is very strong and efficient. There is a mini kitchenette to use with necessary items but we did not use it. Throughly recommend this place and will go back again if we go back to Lille. And Lille is an amazing place to see!
The apartment was new, big and comfortable. The indoor pool was fantastic for my young daughter. Being a residents building for older people, it was very quiet. Easy for self catering from the nearby supermarket or Wazemmes market, and just a few minutes walk from the Metro to get into Lille old town quickly. The staff were very sweet and tried to help us whenever needed, despite our poor French.
The location was excellent (just a few minutes walk to very nice restaurants and the old town, but in a quiet side street). Our car was kept securely in the owner's garage, which was very reassuring in a large city. The apartment was small but contained everything that we needed and was very clean and the owners were pleasant and helpful.
The location was perfect, right near to the main squares and the old town. There was lots to do and see locally and within walking distance. There was a safe and secure car park within 3 mins walk (Lille Nouveau Siecle).
Despite being so central the hotel was very quiet, and it was exceptionally clean and well catered in the kitchen.
Very convenient for the stations and to walk in to the attractions of Lille old town. Great value family room perfect for an overnight stay or maybe 2 nights. Abundance of places to eat nearby including cafes for breakfast just below the hotel. Lots of clean towels, decent shower comfortable beds. Couldn’t fault it for the money.
The location is perfect. Took the Eurostar and arrived quite late. No hassles at all with the journey as it’s in front of the Lille Europe station. The hotel is near the city centre so there’s no need to pay for public transport. Everything is reachable by walking. Breakfast is good and love the pastries/bread. Comfy beds.
This is a good hotel - clean rooms, well equipped, comfortable beds, good bathrooms, restaurant on site. The value for money is very good. One could stay here quite nicely for either a short or a longer time. The location is a little out of the way, but the centre is a short walk, and it's convenient for Lille Europe.
A good value hotel in a very convenient location, between Lille Europe and Lille Flandres stations. Fairly simple, but comfortable rooms, with a good coffee machine. Lille is not large, so it is a short walk into the old town. Very practical if you have an early train to catch.
The hotel is obviously going through a management change. The new staff are doing their best, and there is a very articulate sense of welcome. All in all, not bad: centrally located, very friendly reception personnel, breakfast (10 euros extra) featuring local produce.
The rooms are small, but oh so clean and comfortable. Location is less than 10 min walk to Euro Lille and within walking distance to the old town and cool restaurants and places to explore in Lille. The bed were very comfy and air conditioning was not loud.
A traditional hotel right in the heart of Lille, it doesn't get more central than this. As long as you get a room with a plaza view, you can enjoy what no one else in this city can: unmatched views of the city's best. Good breakfast. Super nice staff.
The staff were extraordinarily friendly and helpful. The room was spacious and very comfortable. Breakfast was very enjoyable - mainly homemade! The hotel was very convenient for Lille Flandres station and the old town.
The staff were kind and welcoming and let us into the room before the check-in hour. The hotel is right in the Lille old town, so very convenient to go out for walks. The room was quite clean.
Clean comfortable room with A/C. Very friendly staff, good breakfast . Best of all was location, on a quiet street but right round corner from many great restaurants and bars Lille Old Town
I liked the view from the hotel room window. I liked that the hotel was near the train station lille flandres and that it was also relatively near to Lille old town.
