Guestling House, hotel in Winchelsea

Situated in Guestling, 34 km from Eastbourne Miniature Steam Railway Adventure Park, Guestling House features accommodation with a garden, free private parking, a shared lounge and barbecue...

We were delighted to find Guestling House! The owners are so friendly - as are the chickens and ducks that roam free range around the site during the day. Altogether it was a charming place in a lovely setting, overlooking lots of land for their vineyard. A taxi from the Fairlight end of Hastings was £10 after midnight and there was ample free parking on-site - with the number of rooms it would never be full. There was a honesty box for slices of cake and flapjack to help yourself to, and a variety of other items for sale, including fizz and cider that appeared to be produced on site. Rooms were comfortable and well-equipped - 7 rooms in total. Some have a dedicated separate bathroom rather than an en suite, but these were adjacent to/opposite the bedroom, so easy to access and maintain your privacy. Although the website said no breakfast, there was an option of a complimentary breakfast basket to be left outside your door at 7am. This contained fresh milk, apple juice (presumably home-made), cafetiere (for you to make when you are ready) savoury and sweet pastries, and fruit. This could be eaten in your room or outside on the decked area overlooking the garden. There was a very comfortable communal sitting room with a large TV and ample seating - you could book out the whole place and use this for e.g. family gathering. The cost was also great value.

The question as put means our answer is rather misleading.

The question as put means our answer is rather misleading. We did not have time to explore Winchelsea as we would have liked, but spent much of our time in Rye, a quarter-hour drive away and with enough to keep us busy ind interested for two days. We only scratched the surface of the possibilities of the wider area. In Rye, park as soon as you can in any of the car-parks at the foot of the hill and walk. There is masses to see, but the one-way system within the town can be a nightmare to the unwary.

Winchelsea beach is a remote and beautiful coastline, perfect for November stormy weather. 20 mins away from Rye nature reserve and Petts Level cliffs. This is not in Winchelsea itself, but Winchelsea beach.

Beautiful, peaceful, historic town with strong local community feel, excellent to combine with exploring the rest of the area (Rye, Dungeness etc). Lovely place to spend a few hours walking around, enjoying the view over the surrounding countryside. Schedule visit with a date the cellar tours are on- we only found out about these after we visited!

Our hosts were friendly and welcoming. We had a bedroom, bathroom and living room with a TV to our selves. The bed was comfortable and our bedroom was tastefully decorated. Breakfast was the continental variety, with plenty of fruit and croissants. The rooms were scrupulously clean. The Gem made a great place to set up base and explore. We visited Rye, the nature reserve and Winchelsea.

Winchelsea is a beautiful small town with many lovely buildings. It looks idyllic. The church is the central focus of the town and is a must to visit. It is a stones throw from Rye and the nature reserve. There is a glorious walk from the house along the Military Canal to the sea and various paths around the Pett level.

Excellent breakfast, spacious room, lots of teas and snacks in the room which was a bonus, lots of character to the property. Kate was very friendly and helpful. It's a very rural, quiet location out in the sticks but we had bikes so was a 20-30 minute cycle to get into Rye and is close to Winchelsea.

Caravan was clean, spacious and equipped with everything we needed. We didn’t use any of the park facilities, but there was a fish and chip shop and a Co-Op next to the entrance. Pebbly beach nearby and Camber Sands only 20mins away.
