The Glory of Medieval England
Lincoln was a powerhouse of medieval England and retains amazing monuments from that period. In the Uphill district is the castle built for William the Conqueror. Inside its an original copy of the Magna Carta and its ramparts offer fabulous city views. Across the cobbled square which houses the large Christmas market is huge Lincoln Cathedral whose unusual façade features 2 tall towers, while another at its centre overlooks the Bishop’s Palace.
Connecting the cathedral quarter with the Downhill district is aptly named Steep Hill, a narrow street lined with unique shops and historic buildings including the Jew’s House. Even older are the Roman Newport Arch, Mint Wall and the well on Bailgate.
This road slopes down to meet the River Witham at High Bridge, a stone-arched structure with a half-timbered building atop that is the oldest of its kind in England. Lincoln boat trips depart from the Brayford Pool just west.
Another monument is the 18th-century Ellis Mill, opposite the Museum of Lincolnshire Life. The Collection combines an archaeology museum and art gallery, while The Lawn has a conference centre and the Joseph Banks Conservatory, displaying artefacts he brought back from adventures with Captain Cook.

Stunning cathedral - would recommend the floor and roof tours and the cafe. The Victorian prison in the castle and the ramparts walk are well worth visiting. I love Lincoln!
I love Lincoln! I have been 3 times now and keep finding interesting places to go that I either didn't have time for before or hadn't come across. The view from the Castle is amazing - suitable for all weathers. The Victorian Prison inside the Castle is unique and well worth a visit. The Cathedral is breathtaking with a wonderful restaurant attached, helping to extend my visit there. Lots of shops, cafes, bars, cinema, theatre, galleries, etc. Everywhere is welcoming and good value for money. Perfect for a long weekend but also enough to do for a week's stay. I travelled by train there and could walk to everywhere easily. I have used the buses as well, which are easy to navigate.

I regularly go to Lincoln to visit family and stay for a few days when I can. Some parts of the old town area are difficult to access due to cobblestones and narrow pavements with mobility aids. The cathedral is well worth a visit. Shops and restaurants are plentiful.Kathleen - 8.0Scored 8.0

Great venue for a weekend away - you can walk everywhere (steep slope up to the Castle andCathedral). The Cathedral is stunning and the Castle worth the trip on it's own. The £16 ticket seemed a lot, but it was well worth it. A guided tour outside, a walk with audio set around the castle walls, a visit to the old prison and, to cap it all, to see the Magna Carta (one of the four existing copies in existence). Lincoln is an underrated city - it has an amazing Cathedral...
Lincoln is an underrated city - it has an amazing Cathedral and Castle, which are well worth a visit. Steep Hill is only for the fit, but worth it if you can. Lovely small shops and cafés line the route, so you can have a break if you wish. Also, you can visit free of charge art galleries like the Usher Gallery (Turner paintings). The people of Lincolnshire are very friendly and this is why I live here!

The mattress was the best I've slept on in a hotel for a while. Breakfast was lovely although I wasn't a fan of the Lincolnshire sausages but hubs soon cleared them off lol!! The manager was friendly and helpful. The hotel position is great for the castle and cathedral. Car park very close and only £9 for 24hrs. Quality of food and drinks was good too. Location of the hotel is great and even though parking was closed there is a multi storey yards away. The outlook from the hotel is really nice and the corridors and rooms are nice and clean, well lit and airy. A good base for visiting all aspects of Lincoln.

The rooms have been tastefully decorated and there’s have thought of everything you could need whilst there. My son used the sofa bed and it was surprisingly really comfy.
